Tools to Adapt to OER

TOP

OVERVIEW OF SECTIONS

Levitating Objects

Introduction

This module covers the various online tools and platforms for transforming existing course resources into open educational resources (OER). In this session, you will learn what aspects to consider when choosing a tool to convert your existing educational resources into OERs, which include openness, discoverability, accessibility, and sharing capabilities, and how to convert your existing educational resources into OER with Pressbooks.

Learning Objectives

Study Group
Anchor 1

For this module, the learning objectives are the following:

  1. Identify the variables to consider while choosing a tool.

  2. Recognize popular OER creation and authoring tools.

  3. Assess the required level of expertise for low-, medium-, and high-tech tools.

  4. Determine institutional licensing and technological access to facilitate resource creation.

Learners will be able to create open educational resources (OER) for a university course using existing course materials at the end of this program.

Factors to Consider

Anchor 2

Types of OER

How flexible is this tool for creating both text-based and media-rich course modules?

Accessibility

Does this tool make it easier to create accessible content?

Cost

  • How much will it cost to employ this tool? Cost for yourself and your students?

  • Will your students need to create an account to access your OER?

  • How does the tool handle your students’ personal data?

Sharing / Licensing

Does this tool facilitate the application of a Creative Commons license?

Hosting

Does this tool enable you to host your OER on an existing platform and provide a permanent link?

Export Format

This tool allows you to export your material in a format that others may share and reuse.

If they so desire, may your students export their work to a printed format?

Data Privacy Policy

Online tools, especially Pressbooks, enable you to publish your book on the public web. Thus, anyone with the URL can read and access your book.

There are two privacy settings to help you publish and share your webbook easily.

  • Global privacy setting: Let you make your entire webbook public or private

    • Private books can only be accessed by the book's administrator and users who have been added to the book by the administrator.

    • Anyone with the URL to a public book can read it.

When a book's global privacy setting is "public," you can change the privacy for each chapter to choose which ones are shown and which ones only administrators and authorized users can see.

  • Chapter-level privacy settings: Enable you to choose whether or not a certain chapter appears in the public webbook.

Chapter-level privacy settings provide more detailed access to particular content within your book. Chapter-level privacy settings only apply when your book's global privacy setting is public.

Using the Organize Tool, you can change the visibility of a chapter.

Low Tech

Utilizing common word processing tools such as Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or Libre Office is the easiest approach to developing instructional materials. This software includes most of the functions required for standard content, and the file may be exported to PDF or printed without difficulty. Other low-tech alternatives include:

Medium Tech

Creating a website or hosting resource is another common method for developing or revising instructional materials. This may be done via a blog, a static website, or a wiki. WordPress may be an excellent platform for such medium-tech projects.

High Tech

There are many professional tools for creating content. Pressbook is a publishing software that makes it simple to create interactive e-books and other text-based content. Jupyter Notebooks may need time and specialized expertise to master.

Some authoring tools limit how the final product may be shared or published. Before commencing, make sure you understand the conditions of use and whether you may relocate your work to another platform.

The Definition of "Pressbooks"

Pressbooks is free software for publishing books that is used by many OER programs around the world. It is compatible with several plugins, such as H5P (interactive content), Hypothes.is (collaborative annotation), and MathJax (accessible equations). Pressbooks can be used to make open textbooks that can be read online or downloaded in different formats (e.g., PDF, ePub, XML).
